It was also good to become reacquainted with Newman’s Jason King inspired secret agent Richard Jeperson from T he Man from the Diogenes Club and to see Nezumi an alumni of the exclusive girl’s educational establishment featured in The Secrets of Drearcliffe Grange School and The Haunting of Drearcliffe Grange School, take on a role she could get her little pointed teeth into. That didn’t make the story any less enjoyable, it just meant that I had to work just bit harder to pull together as many of the cultural references used, as I could for my own personal enjoyment later.

This was largely because of my own unfamiliarity with much of the Japanese source material that Newman’s magpie mind has used to populate the narrative. As per usual Newman has liberally peppered the novel with plenty of movie/comic/video game/TV and literary hidden gems for us to discover although I have to admit that I found Anno Dracula 1999 Daikaiju just a little more difficult to access than most of the previous entries in the Anno Dracula canon.
